It All Began in 2019
The Agave Lab was born out of an obsession with mezcal and how it distills ecology, culture, and ritual into one-of-a-kind expressions of culture and place. While we were looking to Mexico for inspiration, we also realized: agave traditions run deep here, too. The U.S. has its own rich — and often overlooked — history of agave as food, fiber, and medicine, especially among Indigenous communities of the Southwest.
When we purchased our land in 2014 it was covered in dead avocado trees. Since then, we've been slowly working to revive it: building soil, planting cover crops, installing irrigation, and experimenting with what can thrive in a hotter, drier California.
Deanna Moore
The Agave Lab grew from a lifelong love of plants, storytelling, and sustainable living. With a background in ecology and over 20 years in the natural food world, Deanna brings a hands-on, heart-led approach to farming and entrepreneurship. The vision is simple but bold: repairing culture and rekindling connection—to land, to lineage, to each other. We’re building a new model for regenerative living, one small, meaningful action at a time. And yes, we’re having fun while we do it.
We host workshops, farm dinners, and gatherings that bring people into relationship with agave and the broader ecology of Southern California. Our shop features seasonal bundles of handmade, wildcrafted, and upcycled items — all inspired by the land and created in collaboration with other aligned producers.
This is a project about possibility — a way to explore how ancestral knowledge, regenerative farming, and creativity can come together to shape a more resilient future.
